Dr. Mathebele Makwela

Dr. Mathebele Makwela is Acting Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Abu Dhabi, bringing over 15 years of clinical experience in women's health and cancer care. He trained at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, where he completed his medical degree, specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology, and a dedicated fellowship in gynaecological oncology. He holds a Master of Medicine and is a Fellow of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.

Dr. Makwela specializes in treating cancers of the female reproductive system—cervical, ovarian, and endometrial cancers—with particular expertise in minimally invasive surgical techniques such as laparoscopy and robotic surgery. These keyhole approaches allow him to remove tumours and affected tissues while minimizing recovery time and complications compared to traditional open surgery. He has worked at leading hospitals across South Africa and the UAE, building deep experience in complex gynaecological cancer cases.
