Dr. Guido Mannaerts

Dr. Guido Mannaerts is a Professor and Consultant Surgeon in the Department of Surgery at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Abu Dhabi. With over 35 years of surgical experience and more than 10,000 procedures performed, he is among the most experienced bariatric and weight-loss surgeons in the Middle East. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Groningen on advanced colorectal cancer treatment and is double board-certified in gastrointestinal and oncology surgery from the Netherlands. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor at UAE University.

Dr. Mannaerts performs the full spectrum of weight-loss surgery, including sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass (classic and mini), and SADI bypass, with particular expertise in complex revisional bariatric procedures—surgery to correct or improve previous weight-loss operations. He also specializes in colorectal and gastrointestinal cancer surgery, as well as reflux and hiatal hernia repair. His surgical approach emphasizes minimal trauma, reduced scarring, and bloodless techniques to promote faster recovery and better cosmetic outcomes.

Before joining SSMC, Dr. Mannaerts served as Head of Surgery at St. Franciscus Gasthuis in Rotterdam and Chair of Surgery at Tawam Hospital, where he led both bariatric and surgical oncology units. He continues to provide expert care at Mediclinic Al Ain and Gulf Specialised Hospital in Muscat. With more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, his practice is grounded in the latest evidence-based surgical techniques.
