Dr. Sheelaj Sharma

Dr Sheelaj Sharma is a highly experienced anaesthetist with 22 years in the field. British-trained and Indian-educated, he completed his MD in Anaesthesia in India, then trained at Cambridge and the prestigious London and Barts School of Anaesthesia in the UK. He was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Anaesthesia by the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 2015. He completed a Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine fellowship in Chelmsford, UK, and developed a strong passion for teaching and training.

Dr Sharma specialises in ultrasound-guided nerve blocks for acute surgical pain management, regional anaesthesia, and pain medicine. He is a founding member of the British Anaesthesia and Pain Academy and has organised advanced ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia conferences and workshops across the UK, UAE, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and India. Since 2016, he has chaired and organised the Pain conference and workshop for the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI) in London.

His clinical focus is on opioid-free joint surgeries and awake upper limb operations to help reduce reliance on opioid pain relief. Previously, he was a consultant anaesthetist at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital in Essex, where he led fracture neck of femur anaesthesia, started the hospital's first Regional Anaesthesia fellowship programme, and established a day-case awake arteriovenous fistula unit. He joined King Abdul Aziz University Hospital as a senior consultant in 2019, where he taught trainee anaesthetists and brought the European Diploma in Regional Anaesthesia (EDRA) Part 1 exam to the hospital.
