Dr. Zahir Babiker

Dr. Zahir Babiker is a Consultant in Infectious Diseases and Chair of the Tropical and Infectious Diseases Division at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Abu Dhabi. He holds fellowships from the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London and Edinburgh, and the Royal College of Pathologists. Over 29 years, he has built deep expertise in infectious diseases, medical microbiology, and virology, supported by a master's degree in public health and a diploma in tropical medicine from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Dr. Babiker diagnoses and manages a broad spectrum of infections: HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis, brucellosis, tropical parasitic and fungal infections, sexually transmitted infections, bloodstream infections, brain and spinal infections, bone and joint infections, and infections in pregnant women and immunocompromised patients. He also provides travel health advice and vaccinations for people heading to high-risk regions.

At SSMC, he chairs the Antimicrobial Stewardship Programme (which prevents overuse of antibiotics and drug resistance) and directs the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Programme. He is a dedicated educator and researcher with numerous peer-reviewed publications, with particular interests in antimicrobial resistance, digital health applications in infectious disease, migrants' health, and emerging infections.
