Dr. Prasan Rao

Dr. Prasan Rao is a consultant ophthalmologist with 24 years of clinical experience since 1995. He trained at leading teaching hospitals in Mumbai, including King Edward Memorial Hospital where he completed his medical degree with distinction in ophthalmology, followed by postgraduate training at L.T.M. General Hospital and Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals. He undertook specialist fellowship training in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at Sankara Nethralaya in Chennai, and holds fellowship credentials from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, along with national board certification in ophthalmology from India. He has worked in the UAE since 2003.

Dr. Rao specializes in vitreoretinal and macular diseases, medical and surgical retina, cataracts, ocular inflammation (uveitis), eye trauma, ocular tumours, and advanced imaging. He pioneered several treatments in the UAE region, including retinal detachment surgery for premature infant retinopathy (2003), combined laser and injection therapy for age-related macular degeneration (2007), and minimally invasive 25 and 27-gauge keyhole vitrectomy techniques. He has performed over 3,000 cataract surgeries, over 1,500 vitreoretinal procedures, and over 500 combined cataract-vitrectomy operations since arriving in the UAE.

Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Rao is active in training junior surgeons, clinical research, and peer-reviewed publications. He regularly presents at international conferences and serves as invited faculty. He speaks English, Hindi, Marathi, and Urdu.
