Prof. Ahmed El-Barky

Prof. Ahmed El-Barky is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon with over 25 years of clinical and surgical experience. He trained at Benha University in Egypt, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Medicine (1997) and Doctor of Medicine (2005), followed by his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in Ophthalmology from Glasgow, UK in 2006. He currently serves as Head of the Ophthalmology Department at Burjeel in Abu Dhabi, and holds academic positions as an Assistant Professor at Benha University and Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi.

Prof. El-Barky specializes in complex retinal surgery and medical retina management. His surgical expertise includes treating complications of diabetic retinopathy, managing retinal detachments, removing intraocular foreign bodies, and treating retinal trauma. He also has extensive experience with cataract surgery using phacoemulsification in both adults and children, retinopathy of prematurity treatment, and laser therapies (argon and YAG). His medical retina work focuses on diabetic macular swelling, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular diseases, and inherited retinal conditions.

Prof. El-Barky is an innovator who designed the El-Barky Vitreoretinal Chopper, a specialized surgical instrument now manufactured by Geuder Company in Germany for handling complex cataracts. He has published extensively on treating diabetic macular swelling and has led research in the UAE on advanced retinal therapies.
