Dr. Mauricio Herrera

Dr. Mauricio Herrera is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Burjeel Medical City in Abu Dhabi with 24 years of clinical experience in maternal fetal medicine. He is an ISUOG Fellow and President of the Maternal Fetal Medicine Foundation, as well as a founding member of the Fetal Brain Society. Dr. Herrera began his career in this specialty in 2000, when he established one of Colombia's first dedicated maternal fetal medicine units. He has since directed fellowship programs training hundreds of physicians across Latin America in maternal fetal medicine, fetal cardiology, and fetal neurology.

His clinical expertise covers the full spectrum of high-risk pregnancy care, including fetal surgery and therapy, prenatal diagnosis of birth defects, fetal heart and brain imaging, obstetric ultrasound with Doppler assessment, and invasive procedures for diagnosis and treatment. In the UAE, he created the fetal surgery program at Burjeel in 2023, performing the first spina bifida repair in the womb and carrying out over 17 fetal procedures annually. Globally, he manages more than 120 fetal surgeries and therapies each year, including procedures for twins, fetal tumors, and airway conditions.

Dr. Herrera has served on the education committee and board of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG) since 2006, contributing to medical education worldwide. He is fluent in English and Spanish and is considered a leading opinion in obstetric ultrasound, prenatal diagnosis, and fetal therapy.
