Dr. Rachel Herbert Thorne

Dr. Rachel Herbert Thorne is a consultant in infectious diseases and microbiology at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Abu Dhabi, with 18 years of clinical experience. She holds dual certifications in infectious diseases and medical microbiology, and is a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists. She trained in the UK, where she earned her medical degree with specialization in internal medicine and infectious diseases, and holds a master's degree in clinical microbiology.

Dr. Thorne specializes in the diagnosis and management of complex infections, including bone and joint infections (osteomyelitis and septic arthritis), HIV, sepsis, transplant-related infections, and sexually transmitted infections. She has particular expertise in antimicrobial stewardship — the careful selection and monitoring of antibiotics to prevent resistance — and led the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at Burjeel Medical City before joining SSMC. She is also experienced in advising travellers on health risks and disease prevention.
