Dr. Musa A. Sharkawi

Dr. Musa A. Sharkawi is a Staff Physician in the Cardiovascular Medicine Department at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. He trained extensively in the United States, earning his medical degree with Honors from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, followed by residency at Lahey Hospital where he served as Chief Medical Resident, and specialized fellowships in cardiology at the University of Connecticut and advanced training in interventional and structural heart disease at Brigham and Women's Hospital under Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Sharkawi is a high-volume operator who has performed more than 3,000 complex procedures involving coronary arteries, structural heart conditions, and peripheral blood vessels. He specializes in advanced catheter-based treatments including coronary interventions, aortic valve replacement without open surgery, mitral valve repair and replacement, and closure of heart defects. Before moving to Abu Dhabi, he was an Assistant Professor at the Medical College of Georgia, where he led the Structural Heart Disease Program and trained the next generation of interventional cardiologists.

He holds certifications from the American Board of Internal Medicine in three areas—Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine, and Interventional Cardiology—plus certification in echocardiography. His research interests center on outcomes in coronary artery disease, structural heart disease, and cardiogenic shock (when the heart cannot pump effectively). He has been recognized with multiple awards including Fellow of the Year and Star Performer Awards in 2023 and 2024 for patient care excellence.
