Dr. Usman Ahmad

Dr. Usman Ahmad is Division Chair of Thoracic Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, leading the thoracic surgery division within the Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. With 16 years of experience, he previously served as a staff surgeon at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, US, where he directed the Thoracic Robotic Surgery program and assisted in leading the Lung Transplant program. He holds a joint appointment with the Taussig Cancer Institute and is Assistant Professor of Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine.

Dr. Ahmad trained comprehensively in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at leading institutions including Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and New York Presbyterian–Weil Cornell Medical Center. His clinical focus encompasses complex thoracic conditions including lung cancer, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and end-stage lung disease. He specialises in video-assisted thoracic surgery (keyhole chest surgery), robotic-assisted thoracic procedures, and lung transplantation, as well as care for patients requiring ECMO (heart-lung support machines).

Dr. Ahmad and his research team investigate clinical outcomes in thoracic surgery, thoracic cancer, and end-stage lung disease, with particular expertise in benign and malignant thoracic conditions in transplant patients. He serves in leadership roles across the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American Association of Thoracic Surgery, and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.
