Dr. Robert Lodu Serafino Wani Swaka

Dr. Robert Serafino Wani Swaka is a consultant in infectious diseases and chair of the infection prevention committee at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Abu Dhabi. He trained at the University of Juba in Sudan and holds a master's degree in tropical medicine from Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in the UK, along with specialist certifications in infectious diseases, microbiology, and virology from the Royal College of Physicians and Royal College of Pathologists. With 24 years of clinical experience, he has worked as a consultant microbiologist and infectious diseases physician at major NHS trusts in London and Essex, where he held leadership roles including division lead for clinical effectiveness and infection control physician.

Dr. Swaka treats a broad range of infections including tuberculosis, mycobacterial and tropical infections, cardiac infections linked to bacteria or viruses, multidrug-resistant bacteria, and infections in patients with weakened immune systems. He also manages travel-related infections, HIV and sexually transmitted infections, and provides outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (OPAT) — antibiotics given by injection or infusion outside hospital. He has contributed to clinical trials, published research in reputable journals, and presented at national and international conferences.

Dr. Swaka is passionate about teaching and currently holds academic posts as honorary associate clinical professor at University College London and adjunct associate clinical professor at Khalifa University and Gulf Medical University in the UAE. He chairs the clinical and competence committee for the infectious diseases fellowship programme in Abu Dhabi, making him a good fit for those seeking expert care in complex or travel-related infections, as well as patients needing specialist input on hard-to-treat resistant organisms.
