Dr. Mohamed Rela

Prof. Mohamed Rela is a pioneering liver transplant surgeon with over three decades of clinical experience. He practices at King's College Hospital London (Dubai) and leads Dr. Rela Hospital in Chennai. He has performed more than 6,000 liver transplants and conducts approximately 300 liver transplants, 450 complex hepatobiliary surgeries, and over 200 robotic-assisted liver surgeries annually, establishing him as a global authority in the field.

Prof. Rela specializes in liver transplantation, complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, and paediatric liver surgery. He pioneered the split-liver transplantation technique, in which one deceased donor's liver is divided and transplanted into two recipients. In 1997, he performed a landmark liver transplant on a five-day-old girl—the youngest recipient at that time—earning recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records in 2000. That patient is now a 27-year-old law student. He has published over 800 scientific articles on liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery.

Beyond direct patient care, Prof. Rela is recognized for building sustainable transplant programs. He has established liver transplant services in 23 institutions across India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Sudan, and is expanding capacity in South Africa, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. His approach prioritizes long-term local training and financial accessibility, transforming how transplant surgery is delivered in resource-limited regions.
