Dr. Michael Macfarlane

Dr. Michael Macfarlane is a UK-trained Consultant in Palliative Medicine with extensive experience across hospital, hospice, and community settings. He holds an MBChB from the University of Edinburgh and an MSc in Palliative Medicine from Cardiff University, and is a member of the Royal College of Physicians. He now practises at American Hospital Dubai as part of the Palliative and Supportive Care team.

Dr. Macfarlane specialises in managing complex symptoms in patients with serious, life-limiting illnesses—particularly cancer pain. He combines clinical expertise with advanced communication skills and training in ethical decision-making to guide patients and families through difficult medical choices. His approach includes holistic assessment and psychosocial support, recognising that end-of-life care extends beyond symptom relief to encompassing emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing.
