Dr. Salem Alharthi is a Consultant General Surgeon and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Abu Dhabi. With 23 years of surgical practice, he trained at leading institutions including Beaumont Hospital in Dublin and Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, where he completed his residency and specialist fellowships.
Dr. Alharthi specialises in complex gastrointestinal, hepatopancreatobiliary (liver and pancreas), endocrine, and cancer surgery. He has established a referral centre at SSMC for challenging cases, including bile duct injuries, soft tissue tumours, and abdominal wall hernias. He pioneered the introduction of advanced techniques such as cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC (heated chemotherapy during surgery) to the UAE, and routinely performs laparoscopic and robotic-assisted procedures to minimise recovery time.
He is committed to training the next generation of surgeons and actively conducts research to advance surgical care. Fluent in English and Arabic, Dr. Alharthi works with a diverse patient population across Abu Dhabi.
