Dr. Sweeny Johal

Dr Sweeny Johal is a UK-trained consultant gastroenterologist with two decades of specialist-level experience. He graduated from the University of Manchester in 1993 and completed his postgraduate medical training in Greater Manchester, obtaining his MRCP qualification in 1996. He advanced his expertise through training at centres of excellence including the Liver Transplant Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and completed a PhD at Nottingham University in 2003. He also trained at Vancouver General Hospital in Canada.

Dr Johal spent 19 years as a full-time practising gastroenterologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, where he developed and led endoscopy, IBD and IBS services and served as endoscopy and cancer lead for eleven years. He has performed over 6,000 colonoscopies and 10,000 upper endoscopies, and specialises in removing large or complex colonic polyps and advanced endoscopic techniques. His practice encompasses cancer screening, functional bowel disorders (IBS and IBD), liver disease, and management of complications including bleeding ulcers and oesophageal varices.

Dr Johal's approach is holistic and patient-centred, with a particular focus on the brain-gut-microbiota connection. He has authored several self-help books and is an advanced endoscopy trainer. He tailors treatment plans according to international guidelines and emphasises empowering patients in their clinical care.
