Dr. Maria Chaves Samaniego

Dr. María J. Chaves-Samaniego is a Consultant Ophthalmologist with specialized training in glaucoma and cataract surgery. She completed her medical degree at the University of Granada in 2011, followed by residency training in Ophthalmology at San Cecilio University Hospital in Granada and a Glaucoma Fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Florida in 2018. She earned her PhD in Ophthalmology from the University of Granada in 2021. Dr. Chaves-Samaniego has chaired the Glaucoma Unit at Vissum Miranza in Alicante and practiced as a consultant at multiple leading eye centers in Spain before joining Mediclinic Parkview Hospital in 2023.

Dr. Chaves-Samaniego performs a comprehensive range of glaucoma surgeries, including minimally invasive techniques (such as excimer laser trabeculostomy, canaloplasty, and iStent implants) and more complex procedures like trabeculectomy, deep sclerectomy, and glaucoma drainage device implantation. She was the first ophthalmologist in Spain to perform eyeWatch glaucoma surgery. She also specializes in cataract surgery with premium lens options including multifocal, extended depth-of-focus, and toric lenses. Additionally, she performs laser procedures such as selective laser trabeculoplasty and YAG laser treatments.

Dr. Chaves-Samaniego is actively involved in clinical research, leading trials and studies as principal investigator in glaucoma, cataract surgery, and retinal conditions. She is an Adjunct Faculty Member at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, where she mentors ophthalmology residents and medical students.
