Dr. Somar Darweesh

Dr. Somar is a board-certified ophthalmologist with 13 years of experience in eye surgery, trained at Damascus Medical College and Ibn Al-Nafees Eye Surgical Hospital, the largest specialized eye-training centre in Syria. He completed his medical degree in 2007 and specialized in ophthalmology in 2011, followed by a two-year fellowship in oculoplastic surgery (eyelid and orbit surgery). He has worked as a supervising specialist and gained extensive training in corneal and retinal conditions across multiple prominent hospitals in Damascus.

Dr. Somar's clinical focus spans the full breadth of complex eye surgery. He performs cataract surgery, corneal transplants (including artificial cornea implants), retinal detachment repair, vitreous surgery, and eyelid procedures. In 2018, he achieved a notable milestone by performing Syria's first artificial corneal transplant (keratoprosthesis). He is experienced in managing thyroid eye disease, orbital tumours and fractures, and uses laser treatment for retinal conditions.
