Dr. Shahzad Maqbool

Dr. Shahzad Maqbool is a consultant neurological and spine surgeon with 26 years of clinical experience, including 18 years leading neurosurgery departments in South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. He trained at the University of the Punjab (graduating 1989), completed fellowship training in neurosurgery through the College of Surgeons of South Africa (1999), and pursued additional training in interventional pain management (2013). He moved to the UAE in 2010 and has been practising there for the past 15 years.

Dr. Maqbool has performed over 5,000 major brain and spine procedures in both adults and children. His expertise spans minimally invasive spine techniques, complex spine surgery including revision cases, degenerative spine disorders, brain and spinal trauma, keyhole discectomy (removal of herniated disc material), disc replacement, spinal fusion, spinal cord tumours, hydrocephalus shunt placement, and chronic pain management. He is particularly skilled in kyphoplasty and stentoplasty procedures for compression fractures of the spine.

He was the first neurosurgeon to establish neurological and spinal services in the Northern Cape province of South Africa across both government and private sectors, a milestone that reflects his commitment to expanding access to specialised care. His approach combines surgical precision with a breadth of techniques suited to simple and highly complex cases.
