Dr. Zafar Khan

Dr. Zafar Khan is a Consultant Cardiologist at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Abu Dhabi, where he serves as Vice-Chair of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. He completed specialist training in cardiology at Papworth Hospital and spent years as a consultant at Cheltenham General Hospital in the UK, where he directed the Cardiac Catheter Laboratory and introduced advanced coronary interventions. In 2012, he established the Cardiology Department at Burjeel Hospital before joining his current role.

Dr. Khan specializes in complex heart and coronary artery conditions, particularly those requiring catheter-based procedures. He has particular expertise in rotational and laser atherectomy (techniques to clear blocked arteries), percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI, or angioplasty), chronic total occlusions, and left main stem disease. He manages the full range of heart conditions including heart attacks, heart failure, high cholesterol, valve disease, high blood pressure, and chest pain with normal arteries (microvascular angina). He also inserts permanent pacemakers.

Dr. Khan was the inaugural recipient of the SSMC Distinguished Clinician Award in 2021 and has earned multiple Clinical Excellence Awards and consecutive Best Practice PCI Awards at international meetings. He is recognized as an expert by peers globally, speaks regularly at international conferences, and is highly regarded in both the UAE and UK medical communities.
