Dr. Mario Cherubino

Dr. Mario Cherubino is a Staff Physician in the Plastic Surgery Department at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's Integrated Surgical Institute. He trained in plastic surgery at the University of Palermo and University of Insubria in Italy, and completed fellowships in hand surgery at leading Italian hospitals including Multimedica Hospital in Milan and Careggi Hospital in Florence. He also spent time as a research fellow at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center studying stem cells under Dr. Peter Rubin and Kacey Marra.

Dr. Cherubino specializes in complex reconstructive surgery, particularly microsurgery (intricate procedures on small structures using magnification), hand surgery, and reconstruction of the lower limbs, head and neck, and breast. He has completed over 2,000 plastic surgeries, including 300 free flap reconstructions (tissue transferred from one part of the body to another to repair damage). He famously performed the world's first total nasal reconstruction using a medial femoral condyle free flap—a landmark technique that demonstrates his expertise in innovative reconstructive approaches.

Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Cherubino was an Associate Professor at the University of Insubria's Department of Biotechnology and Life Sciences, where he directed a Microsurgery and Lymphatic Surgery Research Center. He is active internationally, having served as an International Scholar with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (2019–2020) at Presbyterian Hospital in New York, presented at numerous conferences, and published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals. He is a member of the Italian Hand Surgery Society council and holds Fellowship status with the European Board of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
