Dr. Maria Borrelli

Dr Maria Borrelli is a licensed ophthalmologist with 15 years of clinical experience. She trained at the Seconda Università degli Studi di Napoli in Italy, where she completed her medical degree, specialist training in ophthalmology and oculoplastics, and a PhD in Experimental Surgery. In 2011, she moved to Germany and was appointed Consultant Ophthalmologist at the University of Düsseldorf, rapidly advancing to Head of the Oculoplastic and Lacrimal Service — a position she held until joining Mediclinic City Hospital in Dubai in October 2025.

Dr Borrelli has extensive surgical expertise in eyelid conditions (drooping eyelids, inturned or outturned eyelid margins, eyelid tumours) and tear-duct disorders. She also performs advanced corneal procedures including corneal transplants (both partial-thickness and full-thickness), and manages conditions affecting the eye's surface such as pterygium and corneal dystrophies. She has substantial experience treating thyroid-related eye disease and glaucoma.

Since 2023, Dr Borrelli has been appointed as a Trainer for the Oculoplastic Fellowship Programme of the Deutsche Ophthalmologische Gesellschaft (German Ophthalmological Society), actively teaching ophthalmology residents. She is a published researcher with peer-reviewed articles in international journals and a regular speaker at national and international conferences.
